Huhn. Chicken.
A photo my great-grandfather (1904-1948) took.
Although he must have seen and lived much distress, destruction, fear, oppression and death as a photographer-soldier in world war II which many of his photos are showing, he obviously had or had kept (?) an eye for a little lightness in tiny moments. despite darkness. At least, I associate this with this motive, one of my archive’s favourites.

Laufende Frau. Running woman.
A photo my great-grandfather (1904-1948) took.
This strongly narrative photo has for me something ambiguous – threatening as humoristic. Something also almost unreal – absolutely, and relatively in the whole archive’s context. It seems that the girl directs her view to the three men or (soldiers ?) on the horizon. Why is she running? Why the photo was taken? Following the path into the background with my eyes, the men and the running girl don’t seem to be so far from each other as on first sight…

Self-portrait in May.
A photo my great-grandfather (1904-1948) took.
It’s kind of maybe naïve and therefore simple surrounding of beauty in which he staged himself as a reader.

Still leben. Still a life.
A photo my great-grandfather (1904-1948) took.
Somehow, he must have loved flowers, that are showing some motives such as a bouquet of colourful flowers in a vase on a nowadays still existing tablecloth. Or he captured simple pansies in the garden. As some seemingly private flower-diapositives are underexposed, he might has experimented and practised also with this motive.

Kind mit Hut. Child with hat.
A photo my great-grandfather (1904-1948) took.
A girl is standing near a handmade fence, her appearance seems to me incredibly adult. Possibly his daughter, my grandmother, her gaze testifies to confidence up to through the camera to the photographer….
